The Watts to dBm Formula

To manually calculate dBm from Watts, you must use the Base-10 logarithm. The fundamental formulas are:

When converting from Watts (W): $$ dBm = 10 \cdot \log_{10}(P_{(W)}) + 30 $$

When converting from milliwatts (mW): $$ dBm = 10 \cdot \log_{10}(P_{(mW)}) $$

Note: Because logarithms of zero or negative numbers are undefined in real mathematics, you cannot enter $0 \text{ W}$ or a negative power value into this calculator.

Why Convert Watts to dBm?

While linear Watts are easy to understand for everyday electronics (like a 60W lightbulb), they are highly impractical for radio engineering.

RF signals experience massive attenuation (loss) as they travel through the air or cables. A transmitter might output $10 \text{ Watts}$, but the receiver might only pick up $0.000000001 \text{ Watts}$. Multiplying and dividing these tiny linear numbers is prone to error.
